Chiropractic Maintenance Care: Do You Need Ongoing Treatment?

Chiropractic Maintenance Care: Do You Need Ongoing Treatment?
Chiropractic maintenance care—regular visits after initial pain resolution—benefits many people by maintaining alignment, preventing recurrence, and supporting long-term function, though it's optional and depends on your lifestyle, job, and individual needs.

The Maintenance Question

Once you're feeling better and your pain is gone, the question comes up: "Do I need to keep coming?"
Good news: no. You don't need to.
But some people choose to, and here's why.

What Maintenance Care Does

Maintenance chiropractic visits keep your body:
  • Properly aligned: Your normal life pulls you out of alignment. Regular adjustments keep you in optimal alignment.
  • Mobile: Regular care maintains range of motion and mobility.
  • Functional: You stay able to do what you want to do.
  • Problem-free: Many people stay pain-free with maintenance care.
  • Strong: We maintain muscle strength and support.
It's like getting your teeth cleaned. You brush at home, but professional cleaning prevents problems.

Who Benefits From Maintenance Care?

Definitely consider it if:
  • Your job is demanding: Desk job, physically demanding job, high-stress job—these pull your body out of alignment
  • You had a chronic problem: If something bothered you for years, preventive care keeps it from returning
  • You're very active: Athletes and active people often benefit from regular adjustments
  • You have poor ergonomics: Hard to change, so regular care helps offset it
  • You've had multiple injuries: Bodies with injury history tend to have recurring issues
  • You want to stay functional: As you age, regular maintenance keeps you moving well
  • You have arthritis or degenerative conditions: Ongoing care helps manage these
Probably don't need it if:
  • You had one-off acute problem: Sleeping wrong, one injury that resolved—once it's better, you might be done
  • Your life is low-stress and ergonomic: If you move well, sleep well, have low stress—you might not need regular care
  • You're consistent with home care: If you regularly do exercises and stretches and maintain good posture, you might stay healthy
  • Cost is a constraint: Maintenance is nice, but not essential; other things might take priority

Typical Maintenance Frequency

Most people who do maintenance care come:
  • Once per month: Most common. Keeps them feeling good and functioning well.
  • Once every 6-8 weeks: Works for some people, especially if they're diligent with home care.
  • Quarterly (every 3 months): Minimal maintenance for people who are generally healthy.
Not weekly. Once you're better, frequent visits aren't necessary.

How Much Does Maintenance Cost?

Much less than active treatment.
  • Monthly visit: $50-150 per visit (much cheaper than active treatment)
  • Quarterly visit: Similar cost per visit
  • Annual cost: $600-1,800 depending on frequency
Compare that to:
  • Ongoing medication: $240-1,200 per year
  • Doctor visits: $150-300+ per visit
  • Physical therapy: $100-200+ per visit
Maintenance chiropractic is cost-effective preventive care.

The Argument for Maintenance

"Why wait until you have pain to get adjusted?"
Preventive care makes sense:
  • Dentists: We see dentists twice yearly even without problems. Why not chiropractors?
  • Fitness: People go to the gym even when they're not overweight. Why? To stay healthy.
  • Car maintenance: We change oil before the engine breaks. Preventive is cheaper than emergency.
Regular adjustments keep your body healthy and functioning, just like regular dental care keeps your teeth healthy.

The Argument Against Maintenance

"I feel good. Why spend money I don't need to spend?"
Also valid:
  • Cost matters: If budget is tight, other things might take priority.
  • You feel fine: If you're feeling good and functioning well, you might not need it.
  • Home care works: If you're diligent with exercises and posture, you might stay healthy without visits.
  • Unnecessary treatment: You shouldn't seek treatment you don't need.
I respect this perspective. Not everyone needs ongoing care.

How to Decide

Ask yourself:
  • Do I have a job or lifestyle that creates physical stress?
  • Did I have a problem that took a long time to resolve?
  • Am I willing to spend money on prevention?
  • Do I feel better with regular adjustments?
If yes to most: consider maintenance.
If no to most: you're probably fine without it.

What If You Stop Care and Pain Comes Back?

This happens. You stop coming, pain returns 6 months later.
That's okay. You can restart care. Many people do maintenance for a while, then skip it, then restart when they notice they're not feeling as good.
Your body tells you what it needs. Listen to it.

Your Maintenance Care Questions

Q: Will you try to push me into maintenance care?
A: No. I'll recommend what I think helps, but it's your choice.
Q: How do I know if maintenance is right for me?
A: We'll discuss it when you're done with active treatment. I'll give my recommendation based on your situation.
Q: Can I do maintenance care just once per month?
A: Yes. That's the most common frequency for maintenance.
Q: What if I can't afford regular visits?
A: That's okay. Do home care and come back if pain returns.
Q: Is maintenance care real medicine or just making money?
A: Both approaches (with and without maintenance) are valid. It's about what fits your life and values.

Make the Choice That Fits Your Life

You're the expert on your body. If maintenance care feels right, do it. If not, don't.
Either way, you know how to care for yourself now.

How Much Does Chiropractic Care Cost in Springfield, MO?

How Much Does Chiropractic Care Cost in Springfield, MO?
Kevin hesitated to call because he assumed chiropractic was expensive. When he found out about our transparent pricing and self-pay options, he felt comfortable moving forward. "I wish I'd called sooner," he said after his third visit when he was already feeling much better.
Cost shouldn't be a barrier to getting help. Let me be transparent about what chiropractic actually costs.

My Fees

Here's what you'll pay at Whole Heart:
New patient visit: $140-$220 (comprehensive exam, assessment, first treatment)
Established patient visit: $70-90 (depending on what's included)
These are my standard prices. I offer a 10% time-of-service discount for self-pay patients.

I also do acupuncture, dry needling, cupping, and soft tissue work at various fees depending on what's needed.
For exact pricing on your specific situation, call and we'll discuss.

Insurance Coverage

I'm currently in-network with Medicare. If you have Medicare, we bill directly — you pay your copay/deductible, and I bill Medicare for the rest. Medicare does not cover exam costs, only
I'm working on becoming in-network with BCBS and Aetna. Call to ask about current status.
I don't take PI or worker's comp unless you're already an established patient, in which case we can work something out.

Self-Pay vs. Insurance

If you have insurance:
  • You might pay a copay ($15-50 per visit depending on plan)
  • You might have a deductible to meet first
  • Insurance covers a percentage or full cost after deductible
  • You might have a visit limit or maximum medical improvement limit per year
If you're self-pay:
  • You pay the fee listed above
  • You get a 10% time-of-service discount
  • No claim forms to deal with
  • No visit limits
Sometimes self-pay is cheaper than insurance with a high deductible. Sometimes insurance is better. It depends on your specific plan.

How Many Visits Will You Need?

This dramatically affects total cost.
Acute conditions (sudden onset): 3-8 visits over 2-4 weeks. Cost: $150-500 self-pay (after discount)
Subacute (medium term): 8-15 visits over 4-8 weeks. Cost: $400-1,000 self-pay
Chronic conditions: 12-24+ visits over 8-12 weeks or longer. Cost: $700-1,500+ self-pay
Some people then move to maintenance care (1-2 visits per month) long-term.

The key: I'll give you an honest estimate of how many visits I think you'll need before starting treatment.

What Affects Cost

  • What services you need: Basic adjustment vs. adjustment plus soft tissue work
  • Your condition: Simple vs. complex
  • How many visits: Acute vs. chronic
  • Whether you need imaging: X-rays add cost
  • Insurance vs. self-pay: Different pricing

Payment Options

Currently: I accept payment at time of service (self-pay with 10% discount, or insurance billing).
I don't currently offer payment plans, but I'm flexible. If cost is a barrier, let's talk. I can work with people to figure something out.

Cost Comparison: Is Chiropractic Worth It?

Consider alternatives:
Ongoing medication: $20-100+ per month = $240-1,200/year indefinitely
Multiple doctor/specialist visits: $150-300 per visit × multiple providers = expensive quickly
Surgery: $10,000-100,000+ plus recovery time plus potential complications
Chiropractic course: $1,000-1,500 = addresses the problem, often avoiding medication or surgery
From a cost-benefit perspective, chiropractic is often the most affordable option that addresses the root cause.

Making It Affordable

Tips:
  • Ask about the 10% self-pay discount
  • Check if your insurance covers chiropractic
  • Get an estimate upfront so you know what to expect
  • Discuss which services are truly necessary vs. optional

Financial Questions

Q: Will you tell me the cost before I commit?
A: Yes, always. You'll know what to expect.
Q: Do you have payment plans?
A: Not currently, but let's talk if cost is a barrier. I can work with you.
Q: What insurance do you take?
A: Medicare in-network. Working on BCBS and Aetna. Call to ask current status.
Q: What if I can't afford the full course of treatment?
A: We'll work with you on a modified plan or discuss alternatives.
Q: Are supplements necessary?
A: Some people benefit from specific supplements, but they're optional. I don't push things you don't need.
Q: Is chiropractic worth the cost?
A: Most people who improve feel it's worth every dollar. Pain relief and better function have real value.

Transparent, Affordable Care

You shouldn't avoid chiropractic because of cost. We'll work with you to make it accessible.
Call to discuss your situation and what it would cost. No surprises.
