Lisa was nervous about her first visit. She didn't know what to expect and worried she'd be pushed into unnecessary treatment.
Instead, she got a thorough assessment, clear explanation of what I found, and honest conversation about her options. "You explained everything in a way that made sense," she told me later. "I felt in control the whole time."
That's how it should be. Let me walk you through what a first visit actually looks like.
Before You Come
Bring your insurance card and ID. If you have recent imaging (X-rays, MRI), bring those. Think about what you want from care — pain relief? Better movement? Prevention?
That's it. No special preparation needed. And remember: you don't need a referral from your doctor. You can see me directly.
The First Visit: Step by Step
Check-in and paperwork (5-10 minutes)
If you haven't done them online, you'll fill out forms about your medical history, current medications, surgeries, injuries, and why you're here. Be thorough and honest. All of it affects how I approach your care.
Consultation (20 minutes)
Now we talk. I'll ask:
- What brought you in?
- When did it start?
- What makes it better or worse?
- What have you tried?
- How is this affecting your life?
- What are your goals?
I'm not just checking boxes. I'm understanding your situation — how it's impacting you, what matters to you, what you want.
Physical exam (25 minutes)
I assess your body:
- Posture: How you stand and move tells me a lot
- Range of motion: Can you move freely?
- Palpation: I feel your spine to find restrictions
- Orthopedic tests: Specific tests to identify the problem
- Neurological tests: Reflexes, strength, sensation if relevant
- Special tests: For specific conditions (like sciatica)
Throughout, I'm explaining what I'm finding. You're not passive — you're learning about your own body.
Imaging (if needed)
Some conditions need imaging — X-rays or MRI — to see what's happening. I don't take X-rays on everyone. If your exam clearly shows a simple restriction and you're young and healthy, imaging might not be necessary. But if I need to see details, confirm something, or rule out serious issues, I'll recommend it.
X-rays are done in-office. Advanced imaging happens elsewhere.
Treatment plan discussion (15 minutes)
This is crucial:
- What I found: "Here's what's happening in your body and why you have symptoms"
- Why it happened: "This probably developed because of..."
- What I recommend: "Here's what I think will help..."
- Timeline: "Improvement usually takes about..."
- Your role: "Here's what you need to do at home..."
- Cost and frequency: "Here's how many visits I recommend and what it costs..."
I give you options and honest information. Some people choose chiropractic; some choose something else. That's okay. Go home, think about it, come back if you decide it's right.
First treatment (if ready)
Many patients get their first adjustment on day one. Some prefer to wait and think about it. Both are fine.
If you're ready, I'll explain exactly what I'm about to do, have you lie on the table, and perform the adjustment. It takes minutes. Afterward, you might feel relief immediately or over the next 24 hours.
How Long Does It Take?
Plan for 60-75 minutes total. Subsequent visits are usually 15-30 minutes.
What Happens After Your First Visit
You might feel:
- Relief: Some people feel better immediately
- Mild soreness: Your body is adapting, similar to post-workout soreness
- Fatigue: Your nervous system is recalibrating; rest helps
- No immediate change: Sometimes improvement builds over hours or days
All normal. I'll give you home care instructions (ice vs. heat, stretches, activity modifications) to help you feel better faster.
Your First Visit Questions
Q: Will it hurt?
A: The exam involves pressure, which might be uncomfortable if you're already sore. It shouldn't hurt. The adjustment shouldn't hurt — tell me if it does.
Q: Do I need a referral?
A: No. You can see me directly in Missouri.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Comfortable clothes that let me see your posture.
Q: How much will it cost?
A: Depends on your insurance and what you need. I'll discuss cost upfront before you commit to anything.
Q: Will you pressure me to sign up for lots of visits?
A: No. I'll recommend what I think helps, but it's your choice.
Q: What if I'm nervous?
A: Tell me. We'll go slowly, I'll explain everything, and you'll feel in control.
